10 RECOMMENDED SITES FOR VOLUNTEERING IN ECUADOR-SOUTH AMERICA

“The secret to living is to give. No matter how busy or broke you are, you always have something to offer others. A lot of people miss out on knowing that their life makes a difference, but they do.”

Tony Robbins

Tucked in between Peru and Colombia, this country is small enough for you to have breakfast with scarlet macaws in the jungle, lunch in the lee of a snow-capped peak and, at tea time, be eyeballed by an iguana whose patch of Pacific beach you have just borrowed.

A multitude of national parks and conservation areas emphasize the incredible variety of Ecuador. They include mangroves; an avenue of volcanoes – many of them active – striding across the Equator; forests growing on the dry Pacific coast, in the clouds and under the Amazonian rains; not forgetting all the animals and birds which flourish in these habitats. In fact, as Ecuador is one of the richest places in the world for birds, with some of the planet’s most beautiful species, the country is a prime birdwatching destination.

Volunteering in Ecuador while you are learning Spanish, or once you have finished your studies, is a great way to not only immerse yourself in the language, but also offers the chance to experience and learn about a new culture as well as give something back to the people and places you are visiting.

Below you will find links to information about the grass-roots organizations and communities that we collaborate with in Ecuador on our mission to promote sustainable development. You can volunteer in Quito or Cuenca while you study Spanish, and volunteer in projects all around Ecuador afterwards, including on the Galapagos Islands.

The animals and their cleaning procedures

  • Food
    • Every Saturday, Germán and Yoli go to the Pelileo market to buy the food for the animals. Every other day the SuperTía (supermarket) gives us their leftovers (fruit and vegetables that are not good for people to eat but we can use for the animals). Normally, they give us tomatoes, peppers, carrots…
    • It is very important to check how much food you are using in order for it to last. If something important is missing, let us know. Go to the garage every other day to get the food from the SuperTía (is always in a crate or in a box).
    • There is a lot of food that rots during the week. Try to separate it from the rest and put as much food as you can in the fridge. Food that has gone bad can be given to the tortoises, but remember they need fresh food too!!
    • The cutting room has to be kept clean. This means that after any food preparation the cutting room has to be swept, the counters cleaned, the rotten fruits and vegetables sorted out and the fridge cleaned. Separate the compost and other garbage. Remember, we put the leaves from the corn in a sack to throw away like the other garbage. When the sack is full you have to take it to the metal bin at the entrance.
    • When you arrive to the cutting room in the morning, check the fridge first to see if there are any fruits of vegetables that are already cut or going bad so you can use these first.
    • The bananas are stored in the compost area. If you need to get more you have to go and collect the ripest bunch. The animals use about 2 bunches of bananas every day. Please, let us know if you are taking the last, so we can tell Germán to buy more.

Please!

Check if the animals are eating, if they leave food, what do they leave? ¿Do you notice any strange behavior in the animals? Any wounds? Any sign of illness?

Any other things you notice: broken enrichment, holes in the fencing, water draining problems.

Always let us know, you are the first line between the animals and the center!

8.) ELDERLY IN NEED, ABUELITOS DE LA CALLE, QUITO

How we started?

Observing the old ladies asking for charity in the streets and mistreated in the city squares, we understood that they were deeply depressed and abandoned, accompanied only by their loneliness. It was time to do something for them, we decided to listen to them, get to know them, support them and above all give them a lot of love and affection based on an active, productive and participatory methodology; with which we have managed to change the negative mentality of old age for a positive awareness of life.

We understood that through music we reached emotions. We enjoyed doing exercises, singing, dancing and through the permanent encounter they began to strengthen their self-esteem and self-confidence. They lost their fear of communicating, of interacting, of moving, of dancing and they became charming little old women and felt happy sharing with the group. We rescue the joy of living with love and a vision of life full of motivation, communication and good humor. We started with 11 grannies and then each one of them recommended their experience to others and over time we shared with +450 old people from the street, developing an occupational and motivational recreational program. The greatest motivation is peace, joy and love.

Why older adults?

Two thirds of the population in Ecuador live in conditions of poverty, the elderly are considered people with physical disabilities, someone who is not taken into account by the family or by society, they are people with many needs, but with few answers.

In Ecuador, low-income older adults who worked in the informal sector as housemaids, bricklayers, street vendors, etc., now live as old people in a situation of extreme poverty. They do NOT have access to social protection, much less medical, they lack subsidies, they do not have a job, and they lack basic needs such as food, health, clothing, and housing. Every day it is more difficult for the grandparents and grandmothers of the street to live in decent conditions.

Our objective

Promote a new culture of positive aging, carrying out activities aimed at ensuring that older people with lower incomes age with dignity and in an active, productive and healthy way. As for the Ecuadorian society, to raise awareness of the support and respect for the elderly, especially those who are in a high-risk situation, through workshops and seminars.

Our vision

To be a solution in Ecuador for the elderly at risk, providing basic food, promoting permanent educational, recreational and occupational activities aimed at social and labor integration. Achieve their maximum empowerment of personal and group fulfillment. Recover the values of respect and support for the elderly. And above all so that they do not survive but so that they live!

Our Commitment

Continue working to prevent begging, indigence and deprivation of the family environment that affects the elderly in poverty in Ecuador, providing them with the basic food they need to live, clothing, comprehensive education, creating a space with adequate activities and conditions to raise their self-esteem, in a happy environment full of love and creativeness, different from the environment in which they live; so that they can express themselves, value themselves, train themselves, achieve their labor integration and consider themselves part of society.

Do you want to stop by the Foundation and help us? It will be an incredible experience; you will greatly appreciate the value of a warm and genuine hug.

  • Volunteers aged 16-18 are required to provide IVHQ with parental consent in order to participate on the program, and may be asked to provide additional documentation to the local team
  • All volunteers aged 13+ are required to provide a criminal background check to IVHQ prior to departure. Those aged 13-17, if unable to obtain a criminal background check, can provide two-character reference letters instead
  • All volunteers are required to have adequate volunteer travel insurance
  • All volunteers must speak fluent English.
  • While being able to speak Spanish is not a requirement to join the Ecuador program, we recommend that volunteers take advantage of the very affordable language lessons offered exclusively to IVHQ volunteers by our partner staff in Ecuador. Past volunteers feel that taking these lessons help immensely with day-to-day volunteer work and communicating with local people. Volunteers interested in taking Spanish lessons can arrange these directly with the local staff once in Ecuador.

Recommended online TEFL course

We encourage volunteers on IVHQ’s Teaching and Childcare projects to come prepared by completing some relevant training, such as a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) course. Although formal teaching qualifications are not required on these projects as volunteers are supported by local staff, taking a TEFL course enables you to gain more from the experience. Visit our Online TEFL Course page to learn how to gain an internationally recognized TEFL certification at a discounted rate.

Location

The IVHQ Ecuador – Quito volunteer program is based in the capital city of Quito and its surrounding urban and rural areas. Nestled high in the Andes, Quito is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful cities in South America. Despite this aesthetic beauty, Ecuador is still a developing country and there is a great need for volunteers to assist with the growth of this city and its disadvantaged communities.

Arrival and orientation

The program orientation begins every Monday and volunteers need to arrive in Quito on the day before orientation.

After you have registered for the program, please book your flights to arrive at the Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO) in Quito. Your airport pick-up is included in your Program Fee and airport drop off is also available as an affordable add-on which you can book through IVHQ. We recommend that volunteers under the age of 18 travel internationally with a notarized letter from their parents to support their documentation.

When you arrive, you will be greeted at the airport by a member of the local team and transported to the volunteer accommodation in Quito. Your accommodation is covered by your Program Fee and includes the night before your program orientation.

If you are traveling in Ecuador prior to your volunteer program, we can arrange for you to be picked up in Quito the day before your program orientation, or you can make your own way to the volunteer office.

Orientation is hosted by our local team at their volunteer offices in Quito. Orientation covers everything you need to know for your volunteer program in Quito – an introduction to Ecuador, Ecuadorian customs, rules and expectations, safety, travel opportunities in Ecuador and an introduction to your project and placement. The orientation will also give you a chance to meet other volunteers and swap contact details for weekend travel and socializing.

Volunteer schedule example

Please note that volunteering on the Ecuador – Quito Program is held Tuesday through Friday and you can expect to participate for full days, unless you’re also taking Spanish language lessons, in which case you’ll volunteer for half days. Weekends on the program are Saturday through Monday.

Weekdays

While our programs are flexible and can be fitted to your requirements, an example of a typical day is as follows:

7:30 AMBreakfast at the volunteer house or homestay
8:00 AMVolunteers leave home and travel to their placements. Work and hours are

dependent on the project and placement that each volunteer is working at.

2:00 – 5:00 PMWork at the placement usually ends. Volunteers are free to travel back to

their accommodation, prepare for the next day, or do some shopping and

sightseeing. If volunteers are taking Spanish language lessons, these will

usually  take place in the afternoons and last 2-3 hours.

7:30 PMDinner at the volunteer house or homestay.

Volunteers on the Ecuador program can also join social clubs arranged by the local staff. The social clubs give volunteers the opportunity to meet volunteers from other projects and share in their experiences on the program. Club activities include free conversational Spanish groups, Ecuadorian movie nights and salsa lessons! All of the club activities are held in the afternoon, after volunteers have finished at their placement, and range in cost from $3 to $5

Weekends

Spanning Saturday to Monday, weekends are extra-long for volunteers in Quito so there is plenty of time to relax or explore other parts of the city and Ecuador.

If you are interested in art, culture and history, you can check out Quito’s historical center, where you can learn about Quito’s history, legends and Pre-Columbian cultures. From there, you can take the El Teleferico cable car for beautiful views of the city and surrounding volcanoes. Horseback riding and hiking is available to the Guagua Pichincha volcano summit. You can visit the coastal region of Salango for snorkelling, Silver Island, and the beautiful beaches of Los Frailes. Jungle excursions can also be arranged to experience nature and unique wildlife such as toucans, parrots, and monkeys.

Long weekends can be taken to travel further afield to explore the amazing national parks of Ecuador or the Galapagos Islands.

Accommodation and WiFi

You’ll stay in a volunteer house or homestay. Bedrooms have single beds, bunk beds or a double bed and you can expect to share a room with one or two other volunteers. Living is comfortable and the volunteer house and homestays have electricity, running water and western bathrooms. Extra nights of accommodation are available at an affordable rate and can be booked through IVHQ once you’ve registered for the program.

WiFi is available at the volunteer house and in some homestays. You can also access WiFi at the local team’s office, or purchase a local SIM card with data for an unlocked mobile phone when you arrive in Ecuador.

Meals

Volunteers are provided with breakfast and dinner every day on the Ecuador program. Breakfast is usually tea or coffee, cereals, local breads, condiments, and fruits and cheese.

Dinners will be a mixture of traditional Ecuadorian meals like meat or vegetarian stews, rice, vegetables or potatoes, and western meals. Carbohydrates, such as potatoes, bananas, plantains, bread and rice are common ingredients for Ecuadorian dishes.

Lunch can be purchased locally for $3 – $5 per day.

If you have any special dietary requirements, please let us know when you apply for the program so we can make arrangements for you. However, you should not expect to eat as you normally do at home and need to be flexible. We will do our best to see that you are well taken care of.

WHILE VOLUNTEERING IN ECUADOR, TAKE ADVANTAGE AND IMPROVE YOUR SPANISH SKILLS!!

Spanish language lessons are available for all volunteers regardless of their ability. We strongly recommend these for all volunteers unless they are fluent in Spanish. Volunteers with a basic level of Spanish should strongly consider these lessons to allow them to work and communicate more effectively during any program they choose to serve in.

We can arrange and organize these language lessons upon your arrival in Ecuador during your initial days of your stay. The language lessons are tailored to each volunteer’s current level of Spanish and must be paid for in Ecuador to our local staff. The cost is very affordable and offered to any volunteer who is interested.
